Gas-condensate field Borisoy discovered in Uzbekistan's Kashkadarya region
Uzbekneftegaz announced the discovery of the Borisoy gas condensate field in the Guzar district of Kashkadarya region, at the Shurtan site.
Exploration well No. 1 is producing a commercial inflow of gas and condensate — 300-400 thousand cubic meters per day, writes Nuz.uz. The gas is planned to be sent for processing and supplied to consumers from October 15; the field's reserves have not yet been announced.
The gist in brief
- The well was drilled to 3,159 meters; drilling began on August 5.
- The inflow was obtained from carbonate rocks at a depth of 2,842-3,001 meters.
- The gas and condensate flow rate is 300-400 thousand cubic meters per day.
- By the end of the year, a second exploration well is planned to be drilled to clarify the structure of the formation and the reserves.
What is known about the field
The well was sited in the Shurtan area in the Guzar district; it is an exploration well: such wells are drilled to check whether there are commercial reserves in the subsurface. The inflow of gas and condensate was obtained from carbonate deposits, that is, from rocks based on limestones and dolomites, over an interval of 2,842-3,001 meters.
Specialists are studying the properties of the productive formations and assessing the potential. From October 15, the gas will be sent for processing for supply to consumers. The second exploration well should show how large the field is: at present, only the flow rate of one well is known, not the volume of reserves.
Other recent discoveries
This is not the only recent discovery in the country. As Nuz.uz recalls, in the "Western Lower Surgil" area in the Muynak district of Karakalpakstan, well No. 19 produces up to 500 thousand cubic meters of gas per day, and in Ustyurt the Karatau field has been discovered with a flow rate of 400-500 thousand cubic meters per day.
What this means for Kazakhstan
For Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan's gas is important through transit. Gas production in the country is falling: in January-August 2026 it amounted to 24.2 billion cubic meters, 16.3% less than a year earlier, while imports are growing. As we wrote, Gazprom's supplies to Uzbekistan increased from 1.28 billion cubic meters in 2023 to 5.64 billion in 2024 and go through Kazakhstan via the Central Asia-Center gas pipeline. New fields could reduce dependence on these imports, but, as noted in the same material, it takes years from the first inflow to production capable of replacing imports.
Author's conclusion
A flow rate of 300-400 thousand cubic meters per day confirms that there is gas in the Shurtan area, but it is too early to judge the size of the field: the reserves have not been assessed, and there is no second well yet. It is worth watching the results of this well and the reserve assessment.
