Construction of the Orda Power solar power plant has begun in Kyzylorda ahead of Republic Day.

Construction of the region's first solar plant with storage has begun in Kyzylorda

This is the first station in the region equipped with an energy storage system; its capacity is planned to be increased to 50 MW in the future. This was reported by the akimat of the Kyzylorda region.

The gist in brief

  • Construction of the Orda Power solar station began on October 21; the ceremony was attended by regional akim Murat Yergeshbayev and Turkish Ambassador Mustafa Kapucu.
  • The station will be the first in the region with an energy storage system.
  • Capacity is planned to be brought up to 50 MW; the project cost, storage capacity and launch date were not disclosed.
  • The region has 11 solar stations with a total capacity of 151 MW; another 7 with a capacity of more than 225 MW are planned to be launched.

What is being built

The main feature of the project is the energy storage system. The storage unit allows part of the electricity generated during the day to be saved and supplied to the grid when the panels are not generating power. This is the first solar station in the region with such a system. The initial capacity, storage capacity, cost and completion date are not given in the report; only the future prospect is known — up to 50 MW.

The ceremony was also attended by Orda Power General Director Gultekin Yigit, the acting regional prosecutor, investment ombudsman Nurbolat Duisenbayev and public figures.

What the akim said

Yergeshbayev recalled other energy projects in the region. Last year, a new thermal power plant was commissioned in Kyzylorda, one of the largest independence-era projects implemented with investor funds. Turkish company Aksa Energy participated in its construction. According to the akim, the TPP fully provided the region's residents with electricity, and part of its capacity is supplied to other regions. A 1,100 MW combined-cycle gas plant worth 1.5 trillion tenge is currently being designed to develop the energy sector of the southern regions and prevent shortages.

Solar energy in the region

Currently, 11 solar power plants with a total capacity of 151 MW operate in the Kyzylorda region. Another 7 such facilities with a capacity of more than 225 MW are now planned for launch. Among them, construction of two 30 MW stations has already begun in the Aral and Zhanakorgan districts.

What this means for Kazakhstan

Solar projects are growing across the country. The energy sector is implementing 24 investment agreements for 3.8 GW, and by 2035 more than 8 GW of renewable capacity is planned to be added, which will require energy storage systems. Separate rules are being prepared for them as well: Turar Alimzhan, director of the renewable energy department at the Ministry of Energy, reported that a law on energy storage systems is under consideration, though no timeline for its adoption was given. The Development Bank of Kazakhstan approved about 54.5 billion tenge for the first phase of a 1 GW project: 60 MW of solar stations for Kazatomprom and 185 MW for KEGOC.

Neighboring countries are also scaling up solar generation. In Tajikistan, Dushanbe ordered solar panels to be installed at all enterprises in the city. In Uzbekistan, residents are paid for surplus electricity from home panels: in the first half of 2026, more than 68,600 people received payments totaling 330.82 billion sum.

Author's conclusion

The storage unit makes the Kyzylorda station unusual for the region: energy generated during the day can be supplied to the grid later. However, the project's key parameters have not yet been disclosed: neither the initial capacity, nor the storage capacity, nor the launch date have been named.
