Who and how much money gave for saiga conservation

I decided to compile a list of grants for saiga population conservation. Moreover, in 2015-16 there was even a grant for an information campaign against the horn trade.

According to open sources, through the "Altyn Dala" initiative, ACBK and partners, about $9.5 million was raised in cash, plus in-kind grants. But this is not exact - trust only official sources.

Here is what is publicly available regarding grants for saiga conservation:

GEF/UNDP. Project "Conservation and Sustainable Management of Steppe Ecosystems" (2009–2013) - $23 million (mostly in-kind contributions), of which "cash" from GEF was $2.21 million. The goal included creating reserves for the saiga (Altyn Dala and Burabay).

Darwin Initiative (UK), a series of grants:

1) Altyn Dala: supporting ecosystem conservation in Kazakhstan - £298,883 (2010–2013). 2) Using saiga conservation to improve rural livelihoods - £118,790 (2003–2006). 3) Combating illegal trade in an endangered species - the saiga. £194,535 (for the Ustyurt population; Uzbekistan/Kazakhstan).

U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USA) - 6 projects totaling $3,156,146.

Example: cooperative agreement F22AC03485 for the Saiga Conservation Alliance with place of performance "Kazakhstan" - $289.6 thousand (of which federal $244.2 thousand).

The Earthshot Prize (international award) - in 2024, the "Altyn Dala" initiative became a laureate in the Protect & Restore Nature category. Each winner receives £1 million to scale up solutions.

BMU/UBA (Germany) - NABU project "Community-based conservation of saiga antelope…" in Kazakhstan (2021–2022) under the Advisory Assistance Programme (amount not publicly disclosed).

Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme (Europe/UK) - "Altyn Dala" received a planning grant for the West Kazakh Steppe project (preparatory funding).

EU (small project grants). The small grants program, funded by the EU and coordinated by NGO Arnika, included projects in Mangystau, including those to combat illegal trade in saiga horns (€1,580).

UN Decade "World Restoration Flagships" - "Altyn Dala" is among the flagships. Targeted support mechanism up to $500,000 for a selected initiative + confirmation that in 2024 the flagships received Targeted Support.

This is how we independently preserved what we are now exterminating.
