The number of confirmed cases in the United States is increasing not because the parasite multiplies in products on the shelf — specialists emphasize that this does not happen — but due to a combination of other reasons: the long incubation period of the disease, delays in patients seeking medical care, the time required for laboratory confirmation of the diagnosis, and the ongoing epidemiological investigation, during which previously affected individuals are gradually added to the overall statistics. The main symptoms are prolonged diarrhea, abdominal cramps and pain, and nausea; in some of those infected, the infection may be asymptomatic. The most dangerous are complications — dehydration and loss of vital minerals during a prolonged course of the disease, which is what caused the first fatalities in patients with underlying conditions.

Risk assessment for Kazakhstan

The National Center of Public Health of the Ministry of Health emphasized that cases of cyclosporiasis in the country are recorded extremely rarely, and, as a rule, these are isolated imported infections rather than local transmission. Specialists do not undertake to completely rule out a scenario similar to the American one — Kazakhstan imports fruit and vegetable products from various countries, and the theoretical possibility of a contaminated batch reaching store shelves remains. However, the current system of state sanitary and epidemiological control of imported products reduces the likelihood that such a batch would reach consumers on a scale comparable to the American outbreak. A separate, though not identical, control system for the movement of agricultural products is also being strengthened: the Ministry of Agriculture is preparing to introduce mandatory quarantine certificates for the transportation of agricultural products between regions and a digital traceability system — this infrastructure is aimed at phytosanitary risks rather than foodborne pathogens directly, but its logic is the same: the faster the movement of a specific batch can be tracked, the faster a problem can be contained once detected.
